Update: UC Berkeley has been offered the wildcard to go to Nationals!
Update: De Anza beats UC Berkeley to qualify for the Nationals. Here’s the news in the words of the NorCal Director:
And for the nationals: it was a crazy tie-breaker between UC Berkeley and De Anza, and to quote the president of NCTTA, “…there has never been as close of a tie I’ve seen in 5 years…”. Between the two schools, both match points and game points were tied–so it came down to the number of points. De Anza had 268 points in total, and UC Berkeley has 266 points. Congratulations to the De Anza team!
Wow, a quote in a quote!
Original post:
The Co-Ed Team of CalTTC finished second amongst 5 other schools. UC Merced, UC Davis, Stanford, University of Utah, and De Anza were all present in Saturday’s NorCal Regionals. Finishing first was De Anza, as they beat us at the end of the day in a 3-1 victory. The Cal Golden Bears had no problems with the other schools, and we beat them all handily 4-0.
As some of you may know, De Anza is a community college near Cupertino that is surrounded by some great clubs. Stefan Feth is a world-class coach that resides in the area, and so that may explain how De Anza got so many great players this semester. In our first match with De Anza, Mark Wei beat Joseph in a close 3-1 match. However, Andres Yi lost to Vic, Ma Long lost to Koji, and Sean Lee lost to Jonathan, all in close 3-1 matches. I think that if we were to play them again, we would stand a good chance. However, that day they had an edge on us, which resulted in their win.
The question of which school qualifies for Nationals is up in the air now. Last time, we defeated all the schools, including De Anza, but this time it was De Anza who defeated all the schools. That makes us tied with De Anza for first place, and the NCTTA officials will probably be forced to look at match points to determine the winner. When we find out who qualifies for Nationals, I’ll let you guys know on the blog.
